MJF Reacts to No. 1 PWI 500 Ranking: “What Took So Long?”. MJF has officially responded to becoming the No. 1 wrestler in the 2026 PWI 500, and his reaction was exactly as confident as fans would expect from the former AEW World Champion. After Pro Wrestling Illustrated placed him at the top of this year’s list, MJF joked that his first thought was, “What took so long?”

Max’s first reaction to the ranking was characteristically blunt. During an interview connected to PWI’s announcement, he explained that his immediate thought was essentially that the honor had arrived later than it should have.

He then followed that up with another sarcastic remark, saying that some people were simply “slow learners.” Despite the trash talk, Max acknowledged that reaching the top spot is a significant accomplishment.
The 2026 ranking is particularly notable because MJF wasn’t even inside last year’s Top 25. His move from No. 30 to No. 1 represents a 29-place jump, making his rise one of the defining stories of this year’s PWI 500.
Max Calls No. 1 a “Very High Honor”
While Max was never going to miss the opportunity to brag, his comments also showed that he understands the significance of the PWI 500.
He pointed to the relatively small number of wrestlers who have reached the No. 1 position while representing a promotion other than WWE. In his view, that makes the accomplishment particularly meaningful.
Max also pushed back against wrestlers who publicly dismiss wrestling rankings. He argued that claiming not to care about reaching No. 1 is easy, but that the prestige of actually earning the position is difficult to ignore.

That 29-position rise comes during a period in which Max held the AEW World Championship for significant portions of the ranking’s evaluation period. The MJF PWI Ranking gives the AEW star another major accolade to add to his résumé, but his reaction shows that he isn’t treating No. 1 as the end of the conversation.
Instead, Max has immediately turned the ranking into another piece of ammunition for his “best in the world” argument. Whether fans agree with that claim or not, the official PWI 500 has now placed him above every other wrestler considered for the 2026 list.
And judging by Max’s response, he has no intention of letting anyone forget it.
