Mick Foley Explains Why He Signed With AEW In Emotional Statement
Mick Foley Explains Why He Signed With AEW In Emotional Statement. Hardcore wrestling icon Mick Foley recently took to Instagram to share his profound thoughts following his stunning debut for All Elite Wrestling in New York. The legendary multi-time world champion offered fans a deeply transparent look into his decision-making process. In a lengthy social media post, Mick Foley explains why he signed with AEW, directly praising company owner Tony Khan, the passionate roster, the energetic fanbase, and the refreshing backstage culture that ultimately revitalized his love for the business.
A Different Kind of Crowd Reaction
For a veteran who has spent decades performing in front of millions, the reception at the New York venue stood out as something truly remarkable. While legacy performers often show up just to receive a quick burst of cheers from the audience, the legendary star felt a much deeper connection with the fans in attendance this time around.
“Now there’s nothing wrong with getting a nostalgia pop. I’ve received plenty of those and they feel good. But the reaction I received in New York was different. It was a reaction that said we’re glad you’re here and that I could still make a difference.”
Instead of just celebrating his past achievements, the crowd’s energy signaled that they viewed him as a valuable asset who could still contribute meaningfully to the modern product.
Tony Khan’s Joy vs. The Traditional Way
In his reflection, the Hall of Famer made a point to clarify that he has no intention of disparaging his former long-term employer, stating, “In no way am I here to throw stones at WWE. I love the company. I always will.” He expressed lasting gratitude for the massive opportunities they afforded him throughout his career. However, he openly contrasted the starkly different corporate environments maintained by Tony Khan and Vince McMahon.
“…there’s something unique about seeing the owner of the company just so obviously happy and excited. Mr. McMahon had a different way of doing things, but it wasn’t that type of joy. And it just seems like to me, the AEW wrestlers are out there and they are playing to win because it is understood that failure is part of the process.”
Eliminating Fear Behind the Curtain
According to the veteran, the traditional wrestling landscape often created a high-stress atmosphere where talent felt constant anxiety regarding management’s immediate reactions to their work.
“I’ve seen so many people over the years almost petrified to walk through that curtain because they didn’t know whether they’d get the thumbs up or the thumbs down figuratively speaking. Tony’s excited. Tony loves what he’s doing. He’s happy to be there and I think that type of enthusiasm makes me feel enthusiastic.”
This sense of security allows performers to focus purely on their art rather than worrying about sudden backstage political consequences.
Bringing Back the Attitude Era Energy
After completing his heavily praised in-ring promo segment, several active locker room members asked him if he was going to head back to his hotel. He rejected the idea entirely, choosing instead to stay by the monitor to observe the rest of the roster perform.
“What am I gonna do? Watch Friends reruns in my hotel room? There’s a show. And it wasn’t just a show. It was an amazing show. People were so excited. The energy backstage reminds me of the way WWE felt during the Attitude Era when we were all actively pulling for each other, but we also understood that striking out was part of the process of hitting monumental home runs. So I am really glad to be in a place where wrestlers are encouraged to swing for the fences. Where it’s understood that not every hit’s gonna leave the park.”
Falling Back in Love with Professional Wrestling
Looking ahead, the wrestling icon is eager to see where this unexpected new chapter leads him, noting that he considers himself “like a Swiss Army knife” who can contribute to the presentation in a wide variety of ways. The unique environment has completely altered his mindset regarding sports entertainment.
“I’m just excited about the future and I’m excited about wrestling in a way that I haven’t been in a few years. And I want to thank AEW fans, and the AEW product for helping me fall in love with professional wrestling all over again.”
